The Sunshine Coast hinterland around Maleny holds more waterfalls than most people realise (just search Maleny waterfalls and you’ll see for yourself). Drive the back roads, walk the creek lines, and you keep finding them – tucked into rainforest gullies, spilling over basalt ledges, feeding the same volcanic geology that produced the Glass House Mountains visible on the horizon to the south.

Fortress Falls is one of those finds. The name earns itself – the rock formation surrounding the falls has a weight and verticality to it that feels less like a creek and more like something built to last. Dark basalt walls, the water finding its way through, the rainforest closing in on either side. It’s a quiet place, and a demanding one to photograph well.

This is a vertical fine art photography print – a format I reach for when the subject itself is vertical, and this waterfall is unambiguously that. The portrait orientation follows the falls from the lip to the pool below, the basalt walls framing the composition on either side, the surrounding vegetation adding depth and colour to the scene. A long exposure softens the water into continuous flow against the sharp, textured detail of the wet rock.

At home it suits tall, narrow wall spaces that standard landscape prints can’t fill – a staircase wall, a bathroom, a narrow hallway, or a bedroom alcove. It also pairs naturally with other vertical prints for a gallery wall arrangement.

Available as acrylic face mount, fine art print (framed or rolled), aluminium Chromalux, canvas (framed, stretched, or rolled). Prints from $150. Custom sizing available on request.
