I didn’t have a clear shot in mind when I drove up the range that morning. But as I rounded the bend and the trees gave way to the rolling green hills of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, the first signs of what would become one of the most extraordinary sunrises I’ve ever witnessed started appearing on the horizon.

The tree in the middle was the clear focal point from the moment I saw it. But I knew I had to include the old farm shed to the left, the leading lines of the driveway, and the rising sun coming in from the right. The conditions were an absolute dream – no wind whatsoever, which allowed me to capture the scene in HDR, blending three exposures to hold the detail in both the highlights and shadows. As the sun rose and illuminated the scene from right to left, the light was so incredibly golden it felt like the doors of heaven were opening in front of me.

The ultra-wide format captures the full sweep of the hinterland landscape from one side of the frame to the other, the rising sun visible at the right edge, the scene opening up progressively across the width of the image.

This is one of the most personal images in my collection. It came from a morning I almost didn’t go out for.
