Icarus was made at Coolum Beach at sunrise on a morning when the light was extraordinary – deep orange and red, the kind of light that only happens when there is enough cloud in the sky to catch the colour but not so much that it blocks the sun entirely. The name comes from the Greek myth: flying too close to the sun. The light here has that quality – too warm, too direct, too beautiful to look at for long.
