Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve sits on the edge of the Maleny escarpment, a remnant pocket of subtropical rainforest that has survived everything around it. The trees here are old – some of the oldest remaining subtropical rainforest on the Sunshine Coast hinterland – and that age is physically present in the scale of the trunks and the density of the canopy above.

The portrait orientation was the obvious choice for this subject – the forest is defined by height, by the way the trees rise from the forest floor to the canopy above, and a horizontal format would lose exactly the quality that makes standing inside this rainforest feel significant.

The light inside Mary Cairncross is a particular shade of green. It’s the colour of light that has passed through multiple layers of tropical canopy – filtered, diffused, saturated with the green of the leaves it has come through. This print brings that quality into a room.
