Nationals is named for its location: the surf at Noosa Main Beach during a period when the conditions were as good as the national surfing championships held here each year require. The break was running perfectly, the crowd was thin, and the light in the late afternoon was doing what Noosa’s north-facing aspect does best – coming in warm, from the right angle, turning the face of every wave a saturated gold.
