Rainbow Beach faces north-east toward Fraser Island, and in the late afternoon when the long swell from the Coral Sea is running, the surf at the northern end of the beach takes on a light that’s hard to describe. The water goes green, then gold, then orange as the sun drops. If you’re elevated enough on the coloured sand cliffs above the beach, the whole scene is in the frame at once.
