Pelicans are one of those birds that look prehistoric from certain angles and completely at home in the world from others (who doesn’t love an iconic pelican photo). On the water, with their wings folded and their enormous bill resting on their chest, they have a dignity that’s almost comical – a bird that knows exactly how good it looks and has decided not to rush anything on account of it.

The portrait orientation suits the subject – pelicans are tall birds with a strong vertical presence, and a horizontal format would either cut the bird or waste the frame around it.

The name pays tribute to the pelican from Storm Boy – one of Australian literature and film’s most beloved animal characters – and the print has that same quality of the bird as a particular individual with a particular character rather than a generic wildlife photograph.
